How many words should a children's book be?

There is no single number, because a children's book is really six different formats that grow with the reader. A board book for a toddler is a handful of words per page, often under a hundred in total. A picture book, the classic 32-page read-aloud, usually lands between 300 and 800 words, because the pictures carry half the story. Early readers, written for children just starting to read on their own, run roughly 1,500 to 3,500 words with short, controlled sentences. Chapter books stretch to 4,000 to 12,000 words for confident young readers. Middle-grade novels for ages 8 to 12 are full stories of 20,000 to 55,000 words, and young-adult novels reach 50,000 to 90,000. Why length matters for publishing

Length is one of the first things an editor, an agent, or an Amazon KDP reader checks, because it signals whether you understand the format. A picture book that runs 2,000 words reads as too long for its age and too short to be a chapter book, and it becomes hard to place. Staying inside the expected range makes a book easier to sell, easier to illustrate to the right page count, and easier to price. Aim for the typical target in each band rather than the ceiling: shorter, tighter writing almost always reads better to a child than padding toward the maximum.

Word count by age

Match the length to the reader, not the other way around. Ages 0 to 3 want board books of a few dozen words. Ages 3 to 7 are the picture-book years, 300 to 800 words read aloud.
