Analyze Your First Page

Paste your opening page and see what can be proven about it by counting: sentence lengths and how much they vary, how much of the page is dialogue, the filler words, and the sentences that all start the same way. Free, no account, no credits.

One page, up to 800 words, which is about the first three manuscript pages. No account and no credits, and your page is measured for this check and not stored.

Why it works

Counted, not judged

Every number is a count you can check against the page you pasted. Nothing here has an opinion about your writing, and nothing pretends to.

The same engine, not a demo

This runs the measures the signed-in analysis runs, on one page instead of a whole book. It is a smaller reading, not a weaker one.

It says what it cannot see

One page cannot show a name that drifts between chapters or where a shopper's sample ends. The result lists what it could not answer next to what it did.

How it works

  1. 1

    Paste your opening page

Up to 800 words, which is about three manuscript pages. Nothing is stored.

  2. 2

    Read the counts

Sentence lengths and their variation, dialogue share, filler words, repeated openings, and anything countable that looks worth a second look.

  3. 3

Take it to the whole book

The full Manuscript Analysis reads every chapter, and the layer that costs nothing there is still free.

What this tool measures on one page

It counts the words and the sentences, the average sentence length and how much the lengths vary, the longest sentence, the share of the page that sits inside quotation marks, the filler words such as very, really and just, and any run of three or more sentences that begin with the same word. It also looks for raw formatting characters showing as text, for two different numbers given for the same thing, and for one name written more than one way. Every one of those is arithmetic. You can check any of it by reading the page you just pasted, which is the whole point: a report you cannot verify is a report you have to take on faith.

Why the first page matters

An agent's reader, a competition judge and a shopper on a store page all start in the same place and all stop early if nothing holds them. That is a fact about attention, not a claim about your book, and this tool makes no attempt to predict what any of them will do. What it can do is show you the mechanical shape of your opening: whether every sentence is the same length, whether nine of them start with the same word, how much of the page is talking, and how many words are doing no work. Those are the things an author stops being able to hear in their own prose, and they are exactly the things counting is good at.

What one page cannot tell you

Most of what a manuscript analysis is for needs more than a page. A name spelled Sara in chapter two and Sarah in chapter twenty only shows up across chapters. So does a number your book gives twice with two different values. Publish readiness is about chapters as objects: an empty one, one an import copied twice, a contents page that arrived as a chapter. And where the free sample a shopper reads probably ends is an estimate, because stores do not publish how much they show and it differs by store, so placing it needs the whole book. The result on this page names each of those instead of quietly leaving a gap.

Is it free, and what happens to my text?

It is free, it needs no account, and it spends no credits. Your page is measured for the check and not stored. It is free for a plain reason rather than a generous one: no model runs, so the check costs us almost nothing, and charging for arithmetic would be selling a calculator. The same is true of the free layer inside the product, which is why that stays free for a whole book and not only for a page.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. It needs no account and no credits, and it runs on one page of up to 800 words. Every number it reports is a count you can check against the page you pasted.
Up to 800 words, which is roughly the first three pages of a typed manuscript. Paste more and only the first 800 words are read, and the result says so.
No, and it does not try. Everything it reports is countable: lengths, shares, repeats. Whether a page works is a judgement, and a judgement dressed up as a statistic is worse than no statistic.
No. Manuscript Analysis reports and stops, here and inside the product. What changes and what stays is your decision.
It means nothing countable went wrong in the words you pasted. One page is too short for most of these checks to have anything to find, and none of them judge the writing, so it is not a clean bill of health.
The counts work in every language BookFoundry writes books in. A measure that needs a word list we do not have for your language returns nothing and says so, rather than answering from a list that is missing.
