Long-form consistency

How BookFoundry keeps a long story consistent

A 300-page book fails in a specific way: chapter 19 forgets what chapter 4 established. BookFoundry attacks that failure twice. Constraints the engine must obey while writing, then a verifier that reads the finished manuscript and proves what it found with quotes.

Start a book that holds together

Half one: constraints while the book is written

Consistency is not a reminder in a prompt. It is a set of inputs the engine is required to honor.

A continuity memory window

Before writing each new chapter, the engine re-reads a window of the chapters that came before it. You control the depth: 1 to 10 prior chapters, default 3. The story is written by something that just re-read the story.

Anchor chapters it may not touch

Chapter titles and descriptions you author yourself are hard anchors. The engine is instructed never to rename, remove or duplicate them; it writes around your plan, not over it.

Character sheets with real psychology

Every character carries a 7-tab sheet: identity, appearance, psychology (want, need, lie, wound, ghost), personality, arc, relationships and hidden depth. Set a relationship on one character and the inverse is written onto the other automatically.

Per-field locks

Lock any field, down to a single character trait, and the engine's own refinement passes cannot overwrite it. What you decided stays decided.

Series continuation that inherits

Book two loads book one's story plan and inherits its cast, world, tone and voice. A sequel starts from what already happened, not from a summary you paste in.

World rules and quality bars

Up to 6 hard world rules (for example: magic costs memory), a four-channel sensory palette, up to 3 revision passes, and a minimum craft score per chapter the engine must clear.

The continuity check

Half two: a verifier that proves what it found

After the draft exists, the continuity check reads the whole manuscript and reports places where the book states two different things about the same person or fact. Its scope is deliberately narrow and honest: factual self-contradictions with quotable evidence, not pacing or taste.

Evidence or nothing

Every reported contradiction quotes both passages verbatim and links to their chapters. A claim whose quote cannot be found word-for-word in your text is discarded rather than shown.

A checkable clean result

Differences the checker judged explainable are listed separately with its reasoning. So when it says nothing was found, you can inspect why instead of taking it on faith.

It never rewrites a word

The check reports; the author decides. Your manuscript is never written to. Reports are stored beside the book, not inside it.

Incremental re-checks

After you edit, re-check only the chapters whose text changed and pay only for those. It runs as a background job with a free price quote first, so closing the page never loses a run.

chapters per run

Then close the loop: Replace Everywhere, free

The check finds that the villa was in Tuscany in chapter 2 and in Provence in chapter 14. You decide which is true. Replace Everywhere then applies your choice across every chapter as one operation: each hit shown in its sentence for review first, full one-click undo after.

It costs nothing because it involves no AI: manual editing on BookFoundry is always free. Matching is script-aware, so it behaves correctly in Arabic, where prefixes attach to words, and in Japanese and Chinese, where there are no spaces at all.

Versus a story bible

A story bible documents. This enforces, verifies and fixes.

Tools like Sudowrite keep a story bible: a reference document the AI consults. Useful, but a reference can be ignored. BookFoundry turns the same knowledge into constraints the engine must honor, then checks the finished book against itself.

Questions writers actually ask

In chat tools that write passage by passage, often yes: each response only sees a sliding window of text. BookFoundry generates the book as one project. Before writing each new chapter the engine re-reads a continuity window of prior chapters (you set it, 1 to 10), and your outline chapters are anchors it may not rename, remove or duplicate. Names, facts and voice carry through because the engine is constrained, not merely reminded.
It has something stronger. What other tools centralize as a story bible, BookFoundry splits into two halves: enforceable inputs before generation (a 7-tab sheet per character, world rules, per-field locks the engine cannot overwrite) and verification after the draft exists (a continuity check that reads the whole manuscript and quotes both passages of any contradiction it reports, verbatim).
Yes. Any book in your library can run the continuity check, including manuscripts you imported as DOCX, EPUB, PDF or Markdown. It handles up to 350 chapters and 400,000 words per run, shows a price quote before any charge, and after your edits it can re-check only the chapters that changed.
Never. It reports and quotes; every change is yours to make. For a rename or a repeated correction, the free Replace Everywhere tool applies your chosen change across every chapter in one operation, with one-click undo. No AI call, no credit charge.
