Page counts assume an 11 pt font at single spacing. Print cost is the US black-ink paperback estimate, and royalty is 60 percent of the list price minus print cost. Use the calculator above for your own trim size, font, and price.

How many pages is my book?

Page count depends on three things: your word count, the trim size you print at, and the font size. As a working rule, a 6 x 9 paperback in an 11 point font holds about 300 words per page, a 5 x 8 book holds closer to 250, and a larger font drops those numbers because fewer words fit on each line. Divide your word count by the words per page and you have a close estimate. A 50,000 word novel lands near 167 pages at 6 x 9 and around 200 pages at 5 x 8. The calculator above does this for any word count, trim, and font, so you never have to guess before you format.

How KDP print cost is calculated

Amazon KDP charges a printing cost for every paperback it prints, and that cost comes straight out of your royalty. For a black-ink paperback in the US, books up to 108 pages carry a flat printing charge, and from about 110 pages up the cost becomes a smaller fixed charge plus a per-page amount. Longer books cost more to print, which is why page count matters to your bottom line and not just to your reader. The calculator estimates this cost from your page count so you can see it before you set a price.

Paperback royalty on Amazon KDP

On the major marketplaces, Amazon KDP pays a 60 percent royalty on paperbacks, then subtracts the printing cost. So your royalty per sale is 60 percent of the list price minus what it costs to print the book. A 300 page 6 x 9 paperback listed at $12.99 earns roughly 60 percent of the list price, less a few dollars of print cost. If the number comes out negative, the list price is too low for the page count, and KDP will not let you publish below its minimum. Use the calculator to find a price that pays a healthy royalty.

Choosing a trim size for your book

Trim size is the width and height of the printed book. 5 x 8 and 5.25 x 8 are common for novels and memoirs because they feel like a traditional paperback and fit comfortably in the hand. 6 x 9 is the standard for non-fiction, workbooks, and longer novels because it fits more words per page, which lowers the page count and the print cost for the same manuscript. There is no single right answer, so compare the page count and cost for each trim in the calculator, then write your book to match with BookFoundry and export a print-ready PDF for Amazon KDP.
